The innovative ZELT inductive loop sensor invisibly counts cycles in mixed vehicular traffic with an accuracy of +/-5%.


Using a specially-shaped inductive loop installed in the traffic or cycle lane at a depth of 2-4cm, the cycle counter detects the unique signature of each cycle wheel as it passes over the loop.  All other electromagnetic signals are ignored.  Data is recorded using the Eco Logger.  Each loop analyses cycle traffic within a 1.5m corridor.  Several loops can be integrated in a single counting device to accomodate wider cycle paths up to 6m.



The system was developed, tested and patented by the CETE Sud Ouest le CETE du Sud-Ouest / ZELT (zone expérimentale laboratoire trafic) France in 1999, and adapted and validated by Eco-Counter.

Power consumption:


The inductive ZELT cycle loop has its own external sealed energy source, a 7.2V lithium battery with battery life of 1 year for one or two loops.

When the battery reaches a critical level, a light will flash on the ZELT cycle unit. The Eco-Logger (used to record data from the ZELT cycle loop) has an industry-leading 10-year battery life.




The ZELT cycle loop has been specifically designed to capture and process the unique magnetic signature of a cycle travelling over it.  The sophisticated algorithum is designed to exclude other signals and search for the 15 key criteria that make up the signature of a cycle.  If just one of the 15 critera is not met the signal is rejected.


The ZELT cycle loop detects cycles that have metal in the rim of the wheel.  Some slow moving two wheel scooters may be counted.  Accuracy is 5 % depending on the quality of the installation and the type of traffic flow.
